Treating a patient solely based on testing levels is not a proper way to evaluate and treat a patient, however, understanding the normal ranges for a patient is an important piece to the puzzle. What are Normal Testosterone Levels? The normal level of Total Testosterone is often described as between 350-1200 ng/dl (270-1070 ng/dl in another study), however, this range is not associated with age and everyone agrees that men have peak testosterone levels in their early twenties and then slowly decline at 1-2% per year after that. Normal values will vary by lab as will the reference range. In the US, ranges are seen in nanograms per deciliter.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, commonly called HCG, is an important hormone for sexual development. While it is more commonly thought of in conjunction with women as it affects fertility and ovulation, it also plays an important role in Hormone Replacement Therapy for men. A new study states that there is no compelling evidence justifying using drug therapy to suppress their testosterone production for men with early-stage prostate cancer which have been used for decades while introducing many unpleasant side effects. The analysis states that there is no evidence that androgen deprivation therapy extends the life of these patients. The attached editorial, written by physicians at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, summarizes the analysis regarding the new philosophy on using drugs to diminish testosterone production for early-stage prostate cancer patients which it recommends for inclusion in the “Choosing Wisely” campaign by the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation to warn doctors and patients about unnecessary medical tests and procedures.

The University of Texas Medical Branch has completed a research study in 2014 to examine the links between testosterone use and risks of Cardiovascular events or Myocardial Infarction. The study aimed to look more closely at these issues following a January, 2014 study we previously posted that came to different conclusions. This more recent study concludes stated that: “Older men who were treated with intramuscular testosterone did not appear to have an increased risk of MI. For men with high MI risk, testosterone use was modestly protective against MI”.

Men lose approximately one percent of their testosterone level per year starting in their late teens which starts to become noticeable in their 30s and 40s. Testosterone Replacement Therapy is a solution when the symptoms of low testosterone in males start affecting one’s life; however, there are a number of natural ways for men to enhance their testosterone levels that are safe, effective and recommended for men of any age. Natural low testosterone treatment can be substituted for TRT or used in parallel to testosterone therapy. Some physicians even theorize that raising testosterone levels naturally in one’s 20s by using natural low testosterone treatment methods can help one maintain higher levels later in life.
